June 29, 2025 · By @mritxperts

Total Hours: 20 | Marks: 5

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI is a type of Artificial Intelligence that can create new content. This content can be anything like text, images, music, videos, code, or even 3D models.

It learns from existing data and then uses that learning to generate new, similar data that did not exist before.

Simple Definition:

Generative AI means AI that can “generate” or create new things like:

Examples of Generative AI in Real Life

  1. ChatGPT – Writes essays, answers questions, and creates stories.
  2. DALL·E / MidJourney / Craiyon – AI tools that create images from text descriptions.
  3. Google MusicLM – Creates music based on words like “happy jazz music”.
  4. Deepfake apps – Can swap faces in videos or photos.

These are just a few examples of what generative AI can do today.

How Does Generative AI Work?

  1. Training Data
AI is first trained using a large amount of existing data (text, images, etc.).
  2. Learning Patterns
The AI studies this data and learns patterns, like how a sentence is formed or how a cat looks.
  3. Generating New Content
After learning, the AI can now create new content that looks or sounds similar to the data it studied.

Applications of Generative AI

Generative AI is used in many fields:

1. Text Generation

AI can write:

Example: ChatGPT or Grammarly

2. Image Generation

AI can draw or edit images.

Example: Create a picture of “a cat wearing sunglasses sitting on a beach”

Tools: DALL·E, MidJourney, Bing Image Creator

3. Music Generation

AI can create music based on mood or instruments.

Example: Make relaxing piano music for meditation.

Tool: Google MusicLM

4. Code Generation

AI can write or fix computer code.

Example: GitHub Copilot helps programmers write code faster.

5. Video & Voice Generation

AI can:

Example: Deepfake videos, AI news anchors, voice assistants

Deepfakes and Ethics

Deepfakes are videos or images created by AI where a person’s face or voice is changed to look like someone else.

Risks of Deepfakes:

So, it’s important to use Generative AI responsibly.

Ethics in Generative AI

As teachers and students, it’s important to understand both the power and danger of Generative AI.

Important Ethics to Follow:

  1. Be Honest – Don’t use AI to lie or cheat.
  2. Be Respectful – Don’t create content that hurts others.
  3. Check Before Sharing – Always verify if something is real or generated.
  4. Protect Privacy – Never use someone’s photo, video, or voice without permission.
  5. Be Aware of Fake Content – Learn how to identify deepfakes or fake AI-generated videos.

Suggested Classroom Activities and Practicals

1. GAN Paint

Use a tool like GAN Paint Studio where students can draw a simple shape and AI completes it to look like a real object (like a tree or chair).

2. Text Generation Tool

Try out a safe AI writing tool (like ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini) to:

Activity: Ask students to give the same prompt and compare the AI’s different responses.

3. Real vs AI Image Game

Show pairs of images: one real and one AI-generated. Ask students to guess which one is made by AI.

This helps build awareness of deepfakes and teaches critical thinking.
